Dancewear encompasses a broad range of costumes and workout wear for dancers. There are several universal items for dancers to wear and then there is also type-specific clothing for the different types of dance. One thing is certain, if you are a dancer, or if you have a child that is a dancer, you will need to quickly become familiar with the attire for your specific type of dance.
The basics of dance workout and practice wear include leotards. In the dance world, these are often called “leos.” Leotards are one-piece outfits that fit somewhat like a girls or women’s swimsuit. A leotard is usually made from a blend of nylon and spandex or cotton and spandex. The fabric content is important because it needs to mold to the dancer’s body and allow for ease of movement as the dancer performs. It is also important to select leotards with the stretching component of lycra spandex because the will retain their shape wear after wear.
Another basic element of dancewear is dance pants. There are several varieties of pants designed for dance. Just like leotards, they are designed with fabric that has some stretch. The styles can vary from legging, capri-length, yoga pant styling and straight pant cut. Some dance pants fit like tights, while others flare a bit on the lower part of the leg.
Tights and skirts are important parts of a ballet dancer’s workout and practice wear. A ballerina will usually wear tights, a leotard, ballet shoes and a skirt on a daily basis. Modern dancers don’t don the ballet uniform as much. Instead, modern dancers dance in the dancewear that is comfortable to them. For many of them this includes a leotard or tank top paired with dance pants.
Tap dancers will, of course, require tap shoes, just as ballerinas require ballet slippers. Jazz dancers use a specific sort of leather or canvas dance shoe. Ballroom dancers use shoes specific to ballroom dance. Most modern dancers dance barefoot, although some of them prefer a sole pad that is a soft sandal-like shoe that covers their sole. Footwear is an important part of a dancer’s gear.
Before you set out to outfit your dancer in clothing suited for their dance practices and rehearsals, it is a good idea to measure your dancer. This will help in determining the correct size. Generally, a measurement of the bust, waist, hips and inseam along with their height and weight is a good starting point. When you start out with accurate measurements, you will spend a lot less time guessing what size you need to purchase. This is especially helpful if you plan to purchase dancewear from online retailers.
For a beginning dancer, it is a good idea to begin with one or two rehearsal outfits. This way, you can determine if these items are comfortable before purchasing a passel of them. As young dancers progress, their practices increase in frequency and duration. If the dancer progresses to more intense and frequent workouts, then you can purchase additional dancewear so that they will have clean workout leotards and tights for every rehearsal.
