When you are dancing, it is important that you wear the right clothes. Anyone who has tried dancing in the wrong clothes knows what kinds of problems they can pose. Limited movement, chafing, torn outfits, and overheating are all common issues. Thankfully these can be avoided by choosing the right clothes for dancing in.
The first thing to do is determine what kind of dance clothes you need. This is generally determined by the kind of dance you are doing. Looking at what other dancers wear when performing the same kind of dance will provide you with an idea of what you should be looking for.
But no matter what kind of dance you are doing, there are almost always many choices available. For example, in ballet you generally wear a leotard, ballet shoes, and tights. While this does narrow down your choices in comparison to all the dancewear that is available, you still have to choose the style of leotard, color of tights, and design of shoes that you want.
So as you shop, keep in mind the styles of clothing that you prefer. No matter what kind of dance you are doing, look for sleeve styles, necklines, and materials that you would choose in other situations as well.
Also keep in mind what you should be avoiding. Even if something is a piece of dance clothing, it doesn’t automatically make it suitable for what you are doing. Obviously you don’t want your dance clothes to be too tight, since this can cause chafing, restriction of movement, and tearing of the clothes. But at the same time clothing that is too baggy is a poor choice as well. Baggy clothing can actually cause you to get tangled, and if you are dancing with a partner they can get hung up as well, which can lead to accidents.
Choose something that is loose enough to give you a wide range of motion, but that is trimmed up in the right places and won’t cause you or a dance partner to get tangled in. While you’re at it, buy something that has a flattering cut and color to it. Even if you are just using these clothes to practice, you will feel better if you know you look great while wearing them.
By putting some forethought into your dance clothes, you will be better able to choose something that will suit you and the type of dance you are doing. If you also buy something of good quality, there is no reason you shouldn’t enjoy your dance outfit for a long time.
