You need to have some good belly dance clothes if you’re going to get into this wonderful form of dance. While you can start out with some regular workout clothes, it just isn’t the same as having a set of clothing that is made for belly dancers.
There are different outfits that you can get for belly dancing in, so you will need to determine which is right for you. What most people automatically think of when belly dancing comes up are ornate costumes with gauzy, billowing legs and sheer material draped across the dancer’s face. But this is only one kind of outfit. There are many others that may suit your dance and body style better.
Constantly keep your body shape and clothing preferences in mind as you shop for belly dance clothes. Since there are so many different styles available, you should be able to find at least some of your favorite clothing features in one costume.
Is there a certain kind of sleeve that you like? If you can find a costume with those sleeves you may be very happy with the choice. Is there a certain kind of neckline that you despise? Then don’t buy a costume with that neckline, because no matter how great the rest of the costume is, the neckline will drive you nuts. Is there a certain type of material that you feel amazing in? Then keep your eyes open for a costume that features it.
Don’t “settle” for a belly dancing costume. There are so many available that you should be able to find one you positively adore.
If you are planning on getting a very ornate costume to perform in, you might want to consider getting something more plain for your practice. This way you will be more comfortable as you learn, and you won’t be wearing out your expensive costumes.
As well-made as your belly dance clothes may be, they are just clothes, and they will only survive for so long. The more ornate your costume is, the more likely it is that beads, bangles, and embroidery will be damaged as you dance. So it is never a bad plan to have an outfit that you can practice in, and save your fancy costume for when there are people watching.
Just remember to not get too caught up on any one kind of material or outfit. Looking into as many as possible before you make a decision is smart shopping. Keep in mind that the models always look cute and happy when showing off belly dance clothes. The question is whether you are going to be just as thrilled when you are the one wearing the outfit.
